25: Hospital Experiences Responding to the COVID-19 Pandemic

On April 3, 2020, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a 41-page report documenting the significant challenges facing the health care industry in caring for patients with COVID-19.  With widespread shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE), concerns were mounting at hospitals around keeping staff safe. There were concerns of hospitals being overwhelmed in areas hit the hardest, as hospitals in rural areas had concerns about how the cancelation of elective procedures would limit the funds available to pay hospital staff. This report is based off telephone interviews conducted with hospital administrators overseeing 323 hospitals across 46 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. It may be helpful for understanding strategies and approaches hospitals were taking to expand their capacity, conserve PPE, and find new uses for medical equipment to meet challenges they faced.
